Story wise this and another short game, Ether One (review coming later), which also has a short review, share the theme of the mental illness called dementia. In this game, you take the role of a middle-aged man named Henry who needed to get away from the world for a little while and decided to volunteer as a Ranger. The game takes place over a couple month period and as each passes, the story becomes more entangled in a conspiracy of the disappearance of a boy. Without getting into any sort of spoilers, the interactions between Henry and the other Ranger Delilah were always genuine and heartfelt, while at the same time wrapped in doubt of each other’s actual intentions. The game looks absolutely beautiful in some parts (I am a sucker for beautiful looking forests) but also runs and controls well. The game does suffer from the normal problems these walking-simulators have where there isn’t all that much agency to what you are doing so the game can feel slow or boring if you aren’t in the mood for that. Luckily, the sprint in the game actually does move you along much faster than in other games like these. *cough *cough–Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture. If you’re looking for a nice 3-4 hour adventure with some great voice acting and picturesque sunsets for just a few bucks, Firewatch is that game.
